1888 HOMETOWN BATTERY BASEBALL MECHANICAL BANK Picture(s) and Description:
I can not confirm that this cast iron bank is an original, but it is embossed on the bottom, 'PATD JAN 17 1888', and on the coin cover impressed, 'PATD FEB 2 1875', as shown. From the research I have done, it looks older than the reproductions on line, almost like the original 'Darktown Battery' banks, as all 3 players are black caricatures. On the chest of the batter is embossed 'POSSUMS'. Please see all the pictures, then you be the judge. When the lever is pressed, the mechanism works partially. The batter raises his arms and the catchers' head moves and the coin slot opens as shown. The pitchers' arm and head do not move, and I believe the wire to his mechanism on the inside is broken somewhere. I don't know if the head of the batter should move or not, but it doesn't. It stands 7" tall, on a 9-1/2" x 2-1/2" base, and weighs exactly 4 pounds. I will not change my auctions to 'buy it now' or close them early, so please don't ask.
